From Local to Global - The Importance of A Good Journalism in The Post Truth Era" Guest Lecture and Journalism Training with Radar Bali

The International Relations Study Program in collaboration with the Bali International University Student Press held a guest lecture and journalism training on Friday (22/05) at the Bali International University Library. Taking the topic "From Local to Global: The Importance of A Good Journalism in The Post-Truth Era" this activity aims to make students and the younger generation aware of the threat of the post-truth era where massive manipulation of information and the instrumentalization of political power have resulted in the truth becoming blurred and very subjective. Therefore, this activity is expected to increase students' understanding of the importance of literacy and re-reading of credible journalism products and not easily believe in the construction of narratives circulating on social media and the internet. As a speaker on this occasion was Djoko Heru Setiyawan who is a senior journalist and editor-in-chief of Jawa Pos Radar Bali. In his lecture he reiterated the dangers of information disruption and the tsunami of lies on various social media platforms. The statement was then affirmed by the Coordinator of the International Relations Study Program, Katong Ragawi Numadi, who added that social media algorithms based on emotional preferences can lead the public to deep misinformation, especially if the content consumed is a lie and the result of information manipulation. If left unchecked, this condition will not only lead to sharp socio-political polarization, even on a global scale. The global community will experience a reduction in reasoning and cognitive abilities in understanding and responding to knowledge and information. Furthermore, in his lecture, Djoko explained the difference between the concepts of journalism and journalism where in journalism, the most important aspect is not just producing information but needs to be supported by understanding and applying the code of ethics and moral values. He also shared various experiences he had9 as an investigative journalist who had to deal with government elites and powerful actors who were not responsible. Not infrequently as journalists, various pressures and threats come from those in power, who feel their interests have been disturbed by the news raised.
